The history of the King James Bible is one filled with courageous men of God whom God used to preserve His Word in the English language. This book gives not only a detailed account of how the English translation came to be, but it also gives a biography on each and every one of the men who were involved. As you read the accounts of the men who were put to death, many by fire, by the Catholic church, your faith in and stand for the Authorized King James Bible will be strengthened.
Sacred Motives 10 Reasons To Wake Up Tomorrow And Live For God
Author: Paul W. Chappell Publisher: Striving Together Publications, Lancaster, CA 2012 (144 pages)
One of the dangers that any Christian can face is that of serving God for the wrong reasons and with the wrong motives. God does not want our service to Him to be driven by mere habit. Our devotion and dedication to God must be fueled by a heart that is set upon Him and His desires. If it matters to God, it should matter to us!
Sacred Motives calls the reader to a place we all need to go. The place where we examine our own heart to see if we are serving God for all the right reasons, or all the wrong.
Some of the motives for service to God listed herein are The Glory of God, A Lost World, The Local Church, and The Generation Coming Behind Us. The author's only guide for this piece is the Word of God. Pastor Chappell clearly expounds on the scriptures that give us direction for our service to the Saviour.
Why we do what we do is far more important than what we do. This volume leads us down a path of self evaluation that every Christian should travel from time to time!
When A Nation Forgets God 7 Lessons We Must Learn From Nazi Germany
Author: Erwin W. Lutzer Publisher: Moody Publishers, Chicago, IL 2010 (160 pages)
Unlike many other books that are written to address the ills of our society, this particular piece of literature does not focus on "redeeming" America. Instead, Lutzer points out the social and political climate that paved the way for Adolf Hitler to rise to power. Chillingly, every one of these seven "mile-markers" has either taken place in our country, or is very visible on the horizon. The call is not to political change, but rather for God's people to be about God's work as we recognize the state of our country and world!
In the first chapter of his book, Lutzer records the eyewitness account of a Christian who lived in Nazi Germany during the Holocaust. He, the witness, tells of a train that ran behind their church and how each Sunday morning they could hear the screams and cries of the Jews who were being hauled like cattle to the concentration camps. As the train passed, the members of the congregation would sing louder to drown out the cries and screams.
It is passages like this that make us take a look at ourselves and question our service to God.
Again, this book is not intended to stir up the politically-minded Christian, but rather to stir up the desire to fulfill our God given duty to be a light to a world filled with darkness.
Why Revival Tarries
Author: Leonard Ravenhill Publisher: Bethany House 1979 (176 pages) This modern day Christianity that we are surrounded by, or rather bombarded with, is absolutely foreign to the Word of God. While the churches of the world are consumed with programs, building funds, seminars, and weak preaching that knows nothing of conviction, sinners are dying and falling headlong into Hell everyday. Are we so accustomed to a Christianity that is all about us that we are no longer moved with a sense of urgency to reach the lost with the Gospel? Sadly, the answer is yes!
In his classic on revival, Leonard Ravenhill applies the truth of the Scriptures to our current situation and attitudes like a surgeon would a scalpel. Cutting away at the complacency and self absorption so many professing Christians possess, the author reminds us what the Gospel is all about and what the key factor in the work of God really is; Prayer. Fervent, self-sacrificing prayer.
Warning! This book is not for the faint of heart. It is relentless, unforgiving, and convicting. In short, it is exactly what modern Christianity needs. If you want to be changed and have the single-mindedness that the early Church had, this is the volume for you. If you'd rather stay comfortable right where you are, stay away from this one!
Homiletics From The Heart
Author: Dr. John Goetsch Publisher: Revival Books, Lancaster, CA 2003 (187 pages)
This book transformed my preaching! Preaching is not about standing behind the pulpit and rambling on with stories and opinions. It's about proclaiming the very Word of God to those who are there to hear it. God's Word should never be taken lightly, and neither should the preaching of it. The man of God must prepare his heart and mind to carry out the call that has been placed upon him.
In this book, Dr. Goetsch gives practical instruction on everything from choosing the text, to constructing an outline, all the way to the invitation. Dr. Goetsch pours over thirty-five years of preaching experience into this volume that no preacher, young or old, should be without.
As an added bonus, a special section devoted entirely to the subject of memorizing scripture is included. Dr. Goetsch has personally committed over 14,000 verses to memory. In this section, he shows the method he uses to memorize Bible verses.
